A kitchen or bathroom is a small building project, not just installation

You spend weeks choosing a kitchen or a bathroom. You save hard for it. Then the installer turns up, the cost creeps up, two trades don’t arrive on the days they are supposed to, and the whole thing drags on for twice as long as you were told.

That is what happens when home improvement work is run by people who are really kitchen specialists, or really bathroom specialists, but rely on outside trades for the electrical, plumbing, plastering, and tiling that every real upgrade actually needs.

CB is a building contractor first. We keep the main trades in-house. A kitchen or bathroom upgrade for us is a small building project, not an unfamiliar one, and that shows up in how smoothly the job runs.

The home improvements and upgrades we cover

Home improvements sit between a one-off repair and a full renovation. The walls stay roughly where they are. The layout stays similar.

The goal is usually to modernise a space, improve comfort or efficiency, or get a property ready for sale or letting. On average, an East Sussex homeowner will spend between £4,000 and £25,000 on a kitchen or bathroom upgrade depending on size and specification (based on Checkatrade industry benchmarks). Our fixed quotes make that range predictable rather than a surprise.

Kitchen upgrades

Replacement units, worktops, splashbacks, tiling, sinks, taps, appliance installation, lighting, flooring, and decoration. We handle the small building works around the kitchen (moving a socket, shifting a radiator, patching plaster) in-house so the installation is done properly, not worked around.

Bathroom upgrades and wet rooms

New suites, tiling, showers, wet room conversions, waterproofing, extractor fans, lighting, floors. We can work around your existing suite, or strip out and refit from the floor up. Tanking is done properly before tiling goes on.

Flooring

New tiles, laminate, luxury vinyl, engineered wood, or carpet. We can lift existing floor coverings, repair subfloors, and fit a proper level before the new flooring goes down.

Insulation and energy improvements

Loft insulation top-ups, draught-proofing, secondary glazing, cylinder jackets, and small-scale improvements that make a real difference to an older East Sussex property. Larger schemes (external wall, cavity fill) are assessed case by case.

External improvements

Fencing, gates, patios, paving, driveways, garden rooms, outdoor lighting, external painting, and small outbuilding work. Many of our customers upgrade the outside of the property once the inside is done.

Internal decoration and finishing

Repainting, new skirting and architrave, internal doors, new banisters, feature walls, and small cosmetic building work. Often the finish to a larger upgrade.

What is included in a home improvement project with CB

Every upgrade job follows the same clear process.

1. Free site visit and brief

We come to the property, look at what you have now, and talk through what you want. No charge, no pressure. We will be honest about what is realistic in the space and what is not.

2. Written, itemised quote

You receive a fixed-price quote by email. It lists what is included, the materials being used, what is not included (tile choice, appliances, and so on), and the likely timescale. You can compare it to anything else.

3. Planning and ordering

Once you say yes, we agree the start date, order materials, and book trades in the right order. For kitchen and bathroom jobs, we normally want customer choices locked in two to three weeks before the start.

4. The work

One named lead on the project. Floors covered, mess controlled, and daily tidy-up. Plumbing, electrical, plastering, tiling, and decoration all run from the same team and the same schedule.

5. Certification and sign-off

Gas work is Gas Safe certificated. Electrical work is NAPIT certified with the appropriate paperwork. We walk through the finished job with you before issuing the final invoice.

6. Aftercare

We stay on the phone. If a grout line needs touching up three months in, or a tap drips, ring us. Under our workmanship standard we come back and sort it.

Questions people ask before booking an upgrade

How long does a kitchen upgrade take?

Most residential kitchen upgrades run between 7 and 14 working days on site depending on the size, whether walls are moving, and whether flooring is being replaced. We give you a specific timescale in the quote.

How much does a new kitchen cost in East Sussex?

Typical ranges for a mid-range, fully fitted kitchen in our area are £8,000 to £20,000 including units, worktops, tiling, and labour but excluding appliances. Entry-level jobs can come in under that, and high-spec kitchens can go significantly higher. We quote fixed after a site visit.

How long does a bathroom upgrade take?

A typical family bathroom upgrade takes 5 to 10 working days. Wet room conversions usually take 7 to 12 working days because of the tanking and floor work.

Can you supply the kitchen units and bathroom suite, or do I buy my own?

Both options work. Many customers buy their own from B&Q, Howdens, or a chosen supplier, and we install. Others prefer us to source through our trade accounts, which usually gets a better price and simpler delivery. We are happy either way.

Do I need planning permission for a kitchen or bathroom upgrade?

Not usually, unless you are extending or moving external walls. Most kitchen and bathroom upgrades are covered by permitted development and building regulations only. We tell you at quote stage if anything needs permissions.

Do you handle the electrical and plumbing work, or do I need a separate contractor?

We handle both in-house. NAPIT for electrical, Gas Safe for any gas work. You deal with us, not three different trades.

Will I need to move out while the work is happening?

Usually not. Most of our upgrades are done with the homeowners still in the property. For larger kitchen and bathroom jobs you lose use of that room for a week or two, and we will often set up a temporary sink or microwave point so you are not caught out.

Can you work to a specific start date?

Yes. Once a quote is signed off, we normally book start dates two to six weeks out, depending on the season. We hold dates firmly so you can plan around them.

Do you work on weekends?

We are a Monday-to-Friday company by default. We will occasionally work Saturdays on tight timelines if the customer needs it, and we agree that in writing.

Are you insured?

Yes. Full public liability and employers’ liability cover. Certificates available on request.

What if I change my mind about something mid-job?

Tell us. Small changes are normal and we absorb them where we can. Anything that changes scope, material cost, or time on site becomes a written variation with a price attached before we do it.

Do you take a deposit?

For upgrade work with a material cost above £2,000 we typically take a materials deposit on order. Final balance is paid on completion. The exact terms are on the quote.

Do you guarantee the work?

Yes. Our workmanship standard covers the installation. Gas and electrical work comes with statutory certificates. The Federation of Master Builders dispute resolution route is available as an additional layer of cover.
